The Ultimate Guide to Reformer Pilates for Beginners

Trying something new can be both exciting and a little nerve-wracking, especially when it involves springs, straps, and a machine called a Reformer. If you’ve been curious about Reformer Pilates but aren’t quite sure how to begin, you’re in the right place.
At Pilates Barre & Movement, we believe movement should feel welcoming and empowering from the moment you walk through the door. Whether it’s your first time on the Reformer or you’re returning after a break, our beginner-friendly approach is designed to help you feel capable, supported, and strong.

What Is Reformer Pilates
Reformer Pilates uses a spring-based machine called a Reformer to add resistance and support to your movements. You’ll find yourself lying down, kneeling, standing, or sitting on the carriage, using the springs, straps, and foot bar to guide your body through low-impact, high-effect exercises.

It’s a full-body workout that focuses on strength, mobility, posture, balance, and core control. Every movement is intentional and tailored to help you move better and feel better in everyday life.

Your First Step: Our Introductory Reformer Class
We run an Intro to Reformer class most Saturdays, and it’s the perfect starting point. You’ll be introduced to the Reformer, learn how it works, and get a feel for the movements in a relaxed and supportive setting. You’ll even get a mini workout so you can experience the benefits straight away.

This class is ideal for first timers and those who want to build confidence before joining our regular schedule.

What to Bring and Wear

  • Grip socks are essential for safety and hygiene on the Reformer. If you don’t have any, we sell a range in-studio in sizes and styles we love.
  • Wear comfortable activewear that allows you to move freely.
  • Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the session.
  • And that’s it, no fancy gear required.
